Diet And The Death Clock

The search for health information can be a real bummer; there are so many ways to die, so many things that you could or should be doing and all manner of strange and bizarre theories that will prevent a heart attack - aspirin or no aspirin! So it is refreshing to come across something that delivers information about your body and future prospects in a humorous but clever way. Ladies and Gentleman - we give you - Northwestern Mutual Financial Network’s - Longevity Game!

Northwestern Mutual Financial Network - Longevity Game

This is brilliant - if they would only get rid of the annoying audio it could even be awesome - I thoroughly recommend you try it out. Basically, you put in your age, weight, height and sex - the program generates an avatar (complete with belly fat if you have it!) and you then answer a series of 12 questions. To the accompaniment of applause and graphical brickbats, your avatar changes and the age of your death looms closer or creeps further away. With my family history I was kind of happy to clock in at 74 but I think if I get my weight down I should be able to break 80.

It amuses me that these kind of games are produced by Insurance companies - they remind me of the Death Clock - a wonderful site that has been distressing idiots on the Internet for close to a decade now. Playing the longevity game certainly didn’t make me want to buy insurance - no mater how actuarially interesting it was - but it did make me feel good about quitting smoking and motivated me to get my weight down even further. I think this kind of thing would work much better on a Jenny Craig or weightwatchers site - let’s scare people into dieting - it’s working for me!
