Sexism Rampant in Heart Disease

We’re not in the business of scaring people - we’re out to educate and sell a few Aspirin Keychains – but if you’re a Woman and you want to scare yourself silly – head on over to the Women’s Heart Foundation and check out the Women and Heart Disease Facts page. They even offer the information in a nice .pdf format that you can print off and share with friends and family.

The figures are definite eye openers; did you know that since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease each year, and the gap between men and women’s survival continues to widen? How about the fact that Diabetes doubles the risk of a second heart attack in women but not in men?

Who knew? Certainly not me and I’m guessing I wasn’t alone in my ignorance. But physiological differences aside, the really scary information relates to the differences in how Women and Men are treated.

Studies show women who are eligible candidates to receive life-saving clot-buster drugs are far less likely than men to receive them. After heart attack, women are less likely than men to receive beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and aspirin - therapies known to improve survival. This contributes to a higher rate of complications after heart attacks in women, even after adjusting for age.

Now sure, there are behavioral things that Women can do to help themselves like, not waiting as long to go to the emergency room as men do, but probably the most effective way we can eliminate the differences is for information like this to be disseminated as widely as possible.

I chose this topic today having read Wanda Sowden’s post on Female Heart Attack Symptoms, which in turn led me to the Women’s Heart Foundation. Take a moment to check them out, add this post and those posts to twitter, delicious, stumbleupon, etc – you can use the widget directly below. Oh and finally, now that you’re thinking about Heart Attack – buy a HeartSaver Aspirin Keychain – it might just safe your life – regardless of what sex you are!
